| Don't let the name mislead you--Surf City has nothing to do with hanging ten or wiping out. Rather, this New Zealand quartet's debut EP is full of breathlessly energetic, kaleidoscopically colorful tunes that seamlessly blend Animal Collective-esque, psych-tinged indie art-pop with a `90s lo-fi feel, and a few hazy, atmospheric dollops of shoegazer guitar--to come out with a fresh-sounding new sonic paradigm in the end. | |

Artist Overview
Surf City became one of New Zealand's most buzzed-about bands in the early 2000s with their energetic m?lange of '60s-style pop melodies, Kiwi indie pop in the manner of the Clean and Tall Dwarfs, ringing surf guitar leads, and noisy indie rock influences such as the Pixies, Pavement, and the Jesus and Mary Chain. The group's self-titled EP was released under the name Surf City when the band discovered a group in the U.K. was already using Kill Surf City. In 2008, Surf City began work on their first full-length album. Kudos was released by Fire Records in November of 2010.

- "[A]bsolutely charming. Even at a brisk and easy-to-miss 20 minutes, the six-song EP provides pure pop nostalgia....This set of rousing guitar-pop sounds like it could have been recorded in an actual garage."
