Author Info
Leo Lionni
Although Leo Lionni is a popular author and illustrator of picture books, many people are surprised to find that he did not write his first book until he was a grandfather. Lionni and his family lived in many different places during his childhood including Brussels, Philadelphia, and Genoa. He attended the University of Zurich and married Nora Maffi. In 1939 he, his wife, and their two children moved to Philadelphia where Lionni worked for an advertising agency and was also the head of the graphics design department of the Parsons School of Design. In 1959, at age 50, he returned to Italy. His first picture book, LITTLE BLUE AND LITTLE YELLOW was originally created as a story to amuse his grandchildren during a tedious train ride. SWIMMY, one of Lionni's personal favorites, was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1964.

Editors Note A small black fish teaches a school of red fish to frighten their enemies by swimming close together
Annotation Swimmy is the only small black fish in a school of small red fish. One terrible day, the school is attacked by a big, hungry tuna fish--only Swimmy manages to survive. Now all alone, Swimmy explores the ocean, marveling at all the wonderful sea creatures he encounters. Then one day, Swimmy meets another school of small red fish, but they won't come out to play with him because they are all, understandably, terrified of being eaten by a bigger fish. Luckily, Swimmy comes up with an inventive way for them all to enjoy life in the ocean without fear of becoming another creature's dinner. Selected by the New York Times Book Review as one of the Best Illustrated Children's Books of 1963 and named a 1964 Caldecott Honor Book, this celebration of creative thinking and teamwork features evocative collage and watercolor illustrations.
First Line A happy school of little fish lived in a corner of the sea somewhere. They were all red. Only one of them was as black as a mussel shell. He swam faster than his brothers and sisters. His name was Swimmy.
