| Make no mistake about it; there's nothing folk about the Folk Implosion. Founded by Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh, the Implosion styles a solid and sensible brand of alternative rock, employing conventions from the '60s golden age of pop and an oddball irreverence peculiar to the post-punk era. Recorded in a bedroom, the dozen or so tracks that make up TAKE A LOOK INSIDE sound like Barlow and cohort John Davis are engaging in a musical free-association of sorts. | |
| The resulting album presents only a seminal version of the band that would steal the show on the KIDS soundtrack; nevertheless, the trademark Folk Implosion humor is in full effect here. The tunes aren't bad either. Highlights include "Shake a Little Heaven" and the rockin' "Waltzin' With Your Ego." TAKE A LOOK INSIDE evokes an unlikely yet satisfying combination of the Troggs and King Missile. | |

- "...Many of the songs here could be lo-fi, non-electronic versions of outtakes from TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN (BY STRATEGY)
....Much of it sounds incomplete. But as all true Barlow fans know by now, that unfinished quality is part of the charm..."
