| Emmy Award-winning composers Kristopher Carter, Michael McCuistion, and Lolita Ritmanis, who bill themselves collectively as Dynamic Music Partners (though they use their individual names on the cover of this album), don't usually have much time or money when they are coming up with the music for the Cartoon Network's television series Teen Titans. In fact, they tend to employ only one live musician, electric guitarist Greg Herzenach, to play on otherwise synthesized music. But they had more time and money in scoring the direct-to-video film Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo, allowing them to employ what they say is an A-list of Hollywood musicians in an orchestra. Still, it's Herzenach who makes the strongest impression on music that has the feel of '70s classic arena rock much of the time. Herzenach's rock riffs sometimes recall Neal Schon of Journey and Eddie Van Halen, and sometimes they're just generic. He is backed by the orchestra, playing music appropriate for whatever the scene might be, from action to light romance. But "light" is the key word here. Carter, McCuistion, and Ritmanis never get far from a sweetly melodic approach, even when things are getting a little scary or a little sad. It's always clear that everything is going to be all right for the animated heroes, and that the trouble in Tokyo is going to be settled before the end credits. ~ William Ruhlmann | |
