Lori Foster is a beloved figure among fans of the romance genre not only for her dozens of bestselling novels but for her devotion to philanthropy and community-building. She has spearheaded the publication of a series of anthologies whose sales benefit such causes as animal rescue and child welfare, and she is also the organizer of a popular annual gathering of romance readers and writers. Foster was born and raised in Ohio, and after graduating from high school, in 1977, she married her boyfriend and embarked on a succession of odd jobs, including grocery clerk and materials handler at a large manufacturing plant. Once her three sons were born, she remained at home to raise them. Foster had never really enjoyed reading; she has joked that her main literary material came in the form of "cereal boxes and make-up advice from magazines." That changed one day when she was bedridden with pneumonia and her sister brought her a sack of romance novels. Foster became hooked immediately, and when she was well, she tried her hand at writing her own. Within five years she had penned almost a dozen manuscripts--all of them rejected by publishers. "I admit it. I sucked when I first started," she has recalled. Told by an editor to pay more attention to "point of view," she was too embarrassed to admit that she had no idea what the term meant. In 1996, however, Harlequin purchased her novel IMPETUOUS for its "Temptations" line, and her career was launched. Foster now writes an average of six books a year, most of them contemporary series romances. Under the name L.L. Foster, she also writes an occasional urban fantasy, with paranormal elements and darker themes. She has won multiple Career Achievement Awards from Romantic Times magazine, and her name has become so recognizable to the general public that she has been featured in the crossword puzzles of the New York Times and USA Today.
