Author Info
Molly Bang
An author and illustrator, Molly Bang has lived in Japan, India, and China and has degrees in French and Oriental studies. Two of her books, THE GREY LADY AND THE STRAWBERRY SNATCHER (1980) and TEN, NINE, EIGHT (1983), were named Caldecott Honor Books. She is also a reteller of folktales such as WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN. Bang is known for matching the style of her artwork with the style of the story she is illustrating. For example, THE PAPER CRANE--the story of a Japanese beggar who rewards a kind man with a magic paper crane--is illustrated with cut-paper collage and origami.
From the Publisher
Annotation As a young African-American girl prepares for bed, she and her loving father count backwards from 10, describing some of the things in her bedroom. Gently colorful illustrations accompany the rhyming text.
First Line 10 small toes all washed and warm.
Annotation 2 In a charming ritual, a young girl and her loving father count backwards from 10 to 1 as she prepares to go to bed for the night. Starting with "10 small toes all washed and warm," the text concludes with "1 big girl all ready for bed." The final page, which depicts a small circular image of the girl sound asleep with her arms around her favorite stuffed bear, is a wordless tribute to zero. A calming and comforting look at the sometimes difficult end-of-the-day transition from playtime to bedtime, TEN, NINE, EIGHT is illustrated with color paintings and is a 1984 Caldecott Honor book.
Editors Note "This beguiling picture book, with a palette of eye-filling colors, appears to arise from the love binding a father and his little `big' girl who turn bedtime into playtime with a rhyming game."--Publishers Weekly. "A loving book, perfect for sharing with the youngest lapsitters."--Booklist.
