The clearing in the woods was home to the small forest creatures. (from the first line)
The animals of the forest are carried away, one type after another, by the Terrible Things, not realizing that if perhaps they would all stick together and not look the other way, such terrible things might not happen. From the Publisher:
The animals of the forest learn that they must stick together after the Terrible Things start taking one type of animal away after another.
This book, an allegory about the Holocaust, is set in a forest where, one by one, groups of animals are captured and taken away by the "Terrible Things." The remaining animals decide that their best chance of survival is to mind their own business, rather than work together to defeat the "Terrible Things," a decision that has tragic consequences. Illustrated with b&w drawings.
