Product Overview

A revered band with a devoted cult following, The Go-Betweens shine on this live DVD/CD release, recorded in Brisbane. On the audio-only disc, the Australian indie heroes offer up a 16-song set that draws largely from 2005's acclaimed Oceans Apart and the classic 1988 album 16 Lover's Lane, the veteran ensemble's final studio album before their 2000 reunion record, The Friends Of Rachel Worth (also represented here). Fronted by accomplished singer/songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, The Go-Betweens open, oddly enough, with a McLennan solo track--the spare, melancholy "Black Mule"--establishing that this won't be a concert consisting solely of obvious favorites. Of course, many of the group's most beloved tunes are present and accounted for, including the chiming pop gem "Streets of Your Town," the world-weary lament "Draining the Pool for You," and the urgent, upbeat "Was There Anything I Could Do?" The DVD features the same track listing as the CD, with a bonus 11-song acoustic performance that includes many other Go-Betweens classics, making this an essential purchase for fans.

Artist Bio
The Go-BetweensThe Go-Betweens are the quintessential cult band. Throughout their hugely acclaimed career they have sustained an unparalleled artistic consistency which has year by year elevated them above their contemporaries, many of whom have lapsed in to unfortunate artistic decline whilst the unique songwriting partnership of Forster and McLennan garners more respect and acclaim with each new release. Even Princess Caroline of Monaco and the Premier of Australia have become fans with the latter distributing copies of their latest album in the American Senate! Thanks to a fervent fan base the group is now playing to larger audiences than it ever did in the eighties. Their last release, Bright Yellow Bright Orange, has proven to be one of their biggest sellers to date.Which brings us to That Striped Sunlight Sound, a DVD/CD release including live concert footage filmed at the Tivoli Theatre in the band's hometown of Brisbane, Australia in October 2005 as well as "The Acoustic Stories," a sort of "unplugged" songwriters' sessions featuring music and commentary by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. That Striped Sunlight Sound is a fitting testament to a group that -- nine albums and 25 years later -- are still at the top of their game.

Review It's forever galling to think that they'll always be a cult band, despite producing some of the finest music over the last couple of decades; when U2 CDs are being ground up for motorway ballast (please God, make it soon), the Go Betweens will still be there as examples of elegant, erudite, classic pop music and this DVD suggests that will be the case for some time yet.

Review Often mentioned alongside such legendary acts as REM, The B-52's and Daniel Johnston, The Go-Betweens have inhabited their own unique musical space for over 25 years now. In the process they've Influenced thousands of bands, created some truly amazing alt. Pop gems, and finally winning an ARIA award for 'Best Adult Contemporary Album' for their magestic 'Oceans Apart' opus, it finally seems after being perceived as just a cult band, they're now getting the recognition they truly deserve.
