Author Info
Louise Penny
Louise Penny is the author of a series of mysteries featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surete du Quebec. Generally characterized as "cozies," the books won an unprecedented string of Agatha Awards, garnering the prestigious prize in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Penny was born in Toronto, and a journalism career later took her all over Canada, including stints in Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Montreal, and Quebec City. Upon retiring from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), she eyed the stacks of traditional mysteries by Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers and Josephine Tey on her bookshelves and hit upon the idea of writing such a book herself. The result was STILL LIFE (2006), set in the bucolic Quebec village of Three Pines. "The chances of getting published were tiny so the writing of the book needed to be fulfilling enough on its own. So I decided to create a community I would choose to live in, with people I would choose as friends," she explained to one interviewer. "I wanted it to be . . . a venerable old village with stone homes and a village green, that had survived disasters, and wars, loss and sorrow, and still turned its face to the sun." STILL LIFE quickly garnered Penny a slew of international prizes, including the New Blood Dagger (from the British Crime Writers Association), the Arthur Ellis Award (from the Crime Writers of Canada), and the Dilys Award (from the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association). Her subsequent books--all of which feature the quietly competent and morally upright Gamache-have enjoyed similar acclaim, and she is frequently cited by critics as a worthy successor to the late Christie.
Praise
"Traditional mystery fans can look forward to a captivating whodunit plot, a clever fair-play clue concealed in plain view, and the deft use of humor to lighten the story's dark patches." (starred review)
"Penny writes with grace and intelligence about complex people struggling with complex emotions. But her great gift is her uncanny ability to describe what might seem indescribable--the play of light, the sound of celestial music, a quiet sense of peace."
From the Publisher
Editors Note The brilliant new novel in the New York Times bestselling series by one of the most acclaimed crime writers of our time No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as ?the beautiful mystery.? But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery's massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Sûreté du Québec. There they discover disquiet beneath the silence, discord in the apparent harmony. One of the brothers, in this life of  prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, before restoring peace, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between.
