This hiking guide spotlights fifty of the best hikes in the 495,000 acres of Pisgah National Forest. The featured trails are spread evenly through the various ranger districts of the forest. Each trail had to be of particular botanical or historical interest or offer scenic vistas of mountains and/or waterfalls. All fifty are day hikes, although many can be extended to create a nice overnight trip. The mileages range for 1.4 to 33 miles round-trip.
The authors hiked all the trails using a hand-held global positioning system (GPS). Each trail entry includes distance, elevation gained, GPS coordinates at various points, maps, and a trail description. Sidebars on botanical and historic items of interest, place names, and trail first-aid are also included. Black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout.
Helpful "at a glance" appendices include trails for children, trails for the elderly, trails with scenic views, trails with fly-fishing access, trails for horseback riding, and trails within thirty minutes of Asheville, Boone/Blowing Rock, or Hendersonville.
