From the Publisher:
Two former high-school sweethearts return to their hometown for the funeral of a mentor and confront the choices they've made since they last met, in this new novel from the author of The Notebook and Nights in Rodanthe.
With his uncanny knack for retelling a classic tale with enough emotional poignancy and immediacy to make it feel like the only story you've ever read, Nicholas Sparks crafts a heartbreaking story of star-crossed love in THE BEST OF ME. Although they grew up in the same town, Amanda Collier and Dawson Coles might as well have been from different, warring countries. Their lives could not have been more different, and no one would have ever expected--or wanted--them to find any common ground or point of connection. But Amanda refused to accept everyone else's opinion of Dawson, which was mostly based on his family's dangerous reputation, and she got to know the person he truly was. Years later, their lives have diverged and followed paths both predictable and unpredictable. When the death of a common friend brings them back to their small, divisive town, Amanda and Dawson must face their still deep feelings for each other, as well as the choices they made years ago.
Author Bio
Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Sparks was born on New Year's Eve, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska. The son of a scholar, his early years were largely nomadic until his father settled into a Ph.D. program at the University of Southern California. Like his father, Sparks excelled intellectually throughout high school and college at the University of Notre Dame. His first love, however, was running. When a severe tendon injury forced him off the track during his first year of college, Sparks, at his mother's request, delved into writing. His first book, THE PASSING, was never published and still sits in his family's attic. Several years passed, during which time Sparks married and had two sons. After surviving uninspiring careers as a real estate appraiser, waiter, telemarketer, and entrepreneur, Sparks wrote his first published work, THE NOTEBOOK. This inspirational love story based on the life of his grandparents was an instant best-seller in 1996. Since then, he has written two other books--MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE (1998) and A WALK TO REMEMBER (1999)--both of which have achieved best-seller status. MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE was adapted for film in 1999 and starred Kevin Costner, Paul Newman, and Robin Wright Penn.

"Sparks's ability to capture the truths of this affair makes the story both heartfelt and heartbreaking. It's quite possibly his best work in years." 10/24/2011
