I would give this one ten stars on all points, but five is the highest rank, so it gets all fives from me. Here's why.
On the one hand, this is more of an action/adventure tale than a true fantasy but I LOVED the myriad of characters and the Tom Clancy style of POV changes that all lead up to a very satisfying ending. For a first time novelist, this author promises a lot and delivers a lot. No wonder this book just got a coveted STARRED review in Publishers Weekly. And for those of you not familiar with PW, a starred review is the Holy Grail for new authors in any genre.
Chock-full of colorful historical detail, this book is for fantasy readers who want more than mere monsters and magic to whet their imagination. Romance readers, too, will find plenty of the 'spice' they seek, as will the myriad of action/adventure readers looking for a cast of characters in the Conan vein.
Even if you're not a fantasy fan, you'll still enjoy this book. So will the romance readers. The female co-main character was my favorite. She is a hoot, to say the least. Lord of the Rings fans will find enough of the magical elements to keep them satisfied, too. As a medievalist, I found the wealth of historical detail very entertaining, even if the author did stretch the bounds of reality in a few places. All in all, well worth the price. The hard cover version comes out in April. I would recommend you ask for it at your local library or bookstore asap.

PRWeb Is Right About This Book!
I ran across this article about Blackgloom on PRWeb. For once, they seem to have hit the nail on the head about a new book. Here's what they said:
(PRWeb) January 30, 2006 -- Jon Baxley’s epic fantasy THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY received a rare and coveted ‘starred’ review in the venerable Publishers Weekly on Monday, January 30th. Not only is this quite a feat for a debut novel, but the publisher indicates that this is the first time any Five Star fantasy novel has received that honor. Harry Potter, move over!
When asked about the unexpected news of the starred PW review, Baxley replied, “Well, I was told it might happen but I certainly didn’t expect all the media, agent, and movie production interest that’s been generated in the last few days. My email box keeps filling up with more inquiries, so I have to say, Publishers Weekly certainly is the place to be reviewed. This is turning into a far bigger deal than anything I anticipated. It’s very gratifying to see ten years of work finally get the attention it deserves.”
So, what’s on the horizon for this budding novelist? The second book in the series is already well under way. Tentatively entitled THE REGENTS OF RHUM, it continues the saga of Daynin McKinnon in his quest to unite medieval Scotland despite ghosts, gremlins and gobs of bad guys. Three more books are set to be added to the series over the next few years. If the instant success of the first one is any indication, it should be a rip-roaring adventure series filled with lots of action, mysticism and mayhem along with a cast of characters in the Conan vein and enough romance to satisfy even the non-fantasy readers who are looking for a wonderful, fast paced read. Oprah, are you listening?
Release date for the hard cover version of The Blackgloom Bounty is April 5th. Buy.com's price is the best I've found so far and if rumors are true about the first edition being nearly sold out, you should order today to get one.
