In "The Breakout Principle," the bestselling author of "The Relaxation Response" delivers the ultimate self-help principle--simple instructions to activate a powerful biological trigger that converts conflict and confusion into clarity and extraordinary performance, a state athletes refer to as "the zone."
From the Publisher:
The author of The Relaxation Response describes a state of heightened physical and mental function often experienced by professional athletes, explaining how to achieve such a state in order to improve productivity and reduce anxiety and depression levels.
In this self-help book, and followup to the bestselling THE RELAXATION RESPONSE, Dr. Benson offers practical advice on triggers that can help us "switch on" the mechanisms that help us achieve peak performance. What are triggers and how do they work? How do they "open the door" to peak performance? Benson shares the results of interviews with those who have achieved peak performance in fields such as athletics, performance, creativity, business, etc. and he presents scientific findings on the physiology of peak performance. In the practical part of the book, Benson suggests triggers that readers can relate to and borrow from, such as watching sports, sitting with your pet, or folding laundry. He defines the actual mechanisms involved in the Breakout, and how they can bring us to a higher level of self-awareness, creativity, productivity, and, ultimately, transcendence. Benson has discovered that a belief system is one aspect of peak performance, and he shares his insights into how the Breakout principle can lead to greater transcendence. While it is a self-help book, THE BREAKOUT PRINCIPLE applies to groups as well, and Benson shows how it can work for business. Benson considers the Breakout to be the ultimate self-help principle that can lead to transcendence.
Author Bio
Herbert Benson M.D.
Herbert Benson is widely regarded as a trailblazer in the science of mind/body medicine. His studies in the body's fight or flight response brought widespread attention to the healing potential of the mind, which was not previously regarded as fodder for medical discussion. A 1961 graduate of Harvard Medical school, Benson went on to become a prominent Boston-area physician who specialized in hypertension and behavioral medicine. In 1975, Benson published THE RELAXATION RESPONSE, what was the first of many books he penned exploring the subject. In this bestseller, Benson presented clinical research proving that relaxation techniques (such as meditation and applied breathing) create a chemical change in the body that has a positive impact on physical health and could reverse common stress-related ailments. This is regarded as a groundbreaking work in terms of the Western world's acceptance of the mind/body connection. ||Benson, who has won numerous awards and honors (including a presidential citation from the American Psychological Association), has raised millions of dollars to advance science's understanding of the mind/body connection. In a career marked by tireless dedication, Benson has traveled as far and Tibet and China to study relaxation and meditation techniques in an effort to bridge the gap between Western science and Eastern spirituality. He is the founder of the Mind Body Medical Institute through Harvard University, which continues to conduct research on the effects of relaxation on the body.
