Thomas M. Disch
Thomas M. Disch was educated at Cooper Union and New York University, but dropped out of both. He was an advertising copywriter and began publishing short stories in science fiction magazines. He has traveled extensively, and his work has appeared not just in science fiction publications, but in such mainstream and literary magazines such as Harper's, Poetry, The Paris Review, Mademoiselle, Playboy, and Penthouse. He is also the author of a number classic works of science fiction, including CAMP CONCENTRATION and 334, horror novels, and non-fiction books about both poetry and science fiction.
John Crowley wrote from childhood. After graduating from Indiana University in 1964, he went to work assisting a fashion photographer in New York. There he began writing documentary TV shows, and worked as a proofreader for telephone books. After the publication of his first book, "The Deep" (1975), he became a full-time writer. Crowley has also been a visiting professor at Yale University and the recipient of an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for literature.
From the Publisher
Annotation An ironic horror novel, "The Businessman" tells the story of Bob Glandier, who murders his wife Giselle. She then haunts him, as does the spirit of their offspring. All the while, the ghost of John Berryman is forced (by the 19th-century poet who controls limbo) to haunt Minneapolis.
First Line When she awoke she did not realize for some time where she was. Then it sank in--she was dead and buried in a grave.
First Line 2 When she awoke she did not realize for some time where she was. Then it sank in--she was dead and buried in a grave.
Annotation 3 An ironic horror novel, "The Businessman" tells the story of Bob Glandier, who murders his wife Giselle. She then haunts him, as does the spirit of their offspring. All the while, the ghost of John Berryman is forced (by the 19th-century poet who controls limbo) to haunt Minneapolis.
Editors Note The Businessman presents the sinister tale of Bob Glandier, a morally repulsive Twin Cities executive who murders his estranged wife and attempts to go back to business as usual, until she returns sets about arranging his divine retribution. With help from her dead mother and the ghost of poet John Berryman-thoroughly bored of suburban séances and all too eager to lend a hand-Giselle undertakes the elaborate, righteous, and wickedly amusing haunting of her husband. There is justice in the afterlife after all-at least in Minnesota.
