Astronomy professor Aurora Bells gets a message from space that indicates the arrival of extraterrestrial visitors. According to her calculation, whoever is coming will arrive in three months. A crowded and poisoned Earth is moving toward the brink of the last world war--and is certainly unprepared to face invasion of any kind. But the question remains as to what, exactly, everyone is waiting for.
From the Publisher:
As Earth struggles to cope with the chaotic wake of a nuclear war, astronomy professor Aurora Bell receives a message from space that appears to announce the forthcoming arrival of an extraterrestrial invasion, but the more she investigates, the more she begins to doubt that the message is authentic. By the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of The Forever War. Reprint. As Earth struggles to cope with the chaotic wake of a nuclear war, astronomy professor Aurora Bell receives a message from space that appears to announce the forthcoming arrival of an extraterrestrial invasion, but the more she investigates, the more she begins to doubt that the message is authentic. Annotation:
In 2054, a bizarre message is received by Earth's astronomers: the message seems to originate in deep space and says "We're coming." Stranger still, the message is in English. While the world's scientists scramble to get themselves ready for this mysterious arrival, though, life in Gainesville, Florida, continues as normal.
Author Bio
Joe W. Haldeman
Born in Oklahoma, Joe Haldeman grew up in a variety of places, ranging from Alaska to Puerto Rico. He earned a B.S. in astronomy at the University of Maryland in 1967. He was drafted into the Vietnam War that same year, and fought as a combat engineer. After he was discharged with a Purple Heart, he returned to school for graduate study but never finished his degree. He dropped out to write, and his first story, "Out of Phase," was published in 1969. Much of Haldeman's writing is based in some way on his experiences in the war, and his first novel, WAR YEAR (1972), was a way to address this issue. In 1975, THE FOREVER WAR was published to great acclaim, winning the Hugo and Nebula awards. That same year, he earned an M.F.A. in English from the Iowa Writers workshop. Haldeman has taught at various universities, including M.I.T., in addition to teaching classical guitar and coaching a fencing team. He has written numerous poems and short stories, which include award winners like "Tricentennial" (1976), "The Hemingway Hoax" (1990), "Graves" (1992) and "None So Blind" (1994). In addition to his novels, each volume of the Worlds trilogy was nominated for a Locus Magazine Reader's Poll Award. In 1997, Haldeman wrote a successful follow-up to FOREVER WAR, called FOREVER PEACE, which was also a multiple award winner.

Locus
"I suspect that there are going to be arguments about subgeneric category and dramatic structure in future discussions of THE COMING, but right now I can tell you that you're not going to find a smoother, more assured, more convincingly human tale of the near future on the shelves this year." - Russell Letson December 2000
