A mouse was looking at Mario. (from the first line)
| A mouse, a cat, and a cricket take a bite out of the Big Apple. |
|
From the Publisher:
A musically inclined country cricket who unintentionally arrives in New York City is befriended by Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat as well as Mario, a boy who rescues Chester from a dusty corner of the subway station and brings him to live in the safety of his parents' newsstand. A Newbery Honor Book. |
Annotation:
Music and friendship change the lives of a cricket, a mouse, a cat, and a young boy in New York City's Time Square subway station. Chester, a relocated Connecticut cricket, finds life in New York City lonely and difficult until he is taken in by Mario Bellini, the son of the couple who run the subway station's rather unsuccessful newsstand. Chester also bonds with two others who live in the subway station--Tucker the mouse and Harry the Cat. Chester, Tucker, and Harry worry about the Bellini family and fear that lack of business at the newsstand will drive the family into financial ruin. Luckily, Chester is a talented musician--but will his lovely playing be enough to draw customers to the newsstand? Illustrated with B&W pen-and-ink drawings, THE CRICKET IN TIMES SQUARE demonstrates how art can enrich the lives of even the busiest of New Yorkers. A 1961 Newbery Honor Book, this is the first entry in a series about Chester and his friends.

Author Bio
Garth Williams
Garth Williams illustrated several classic books for children including STUART LITTLE and CHARLOTTE'S WEB, both written by E. B. White, as well as all the books in Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" series. Williams and his family moved around a lot during his childhood, giving him the opportunity to live not only in the United States, but also Canada and England. Upon reaching adulthood and returning to the United States, Williams tried to get a job illustrating for "The New Yorker" magazine, but his artistic style was considered too "European." However, it was "New Yorker" contributor E. B. White himself who suggested that Williams illustrate STUART LITTLE. In addition to illustrating the works of other authors, Williams also wrote and illustrated his own books, such as THE RABBITS' WEDDING.
