From the Publisher:
Trying to make a point to her teacher that she has no artist talent, Vashti jabs the brush onto the canvas in a fit of anger, yet in doing so, Vashti sees something special and soon works with it--making her one crazy dot into a real work of art. Jr Lib Guild.
Annotation:
Vashti is a girl who hates art class because, as she says, "I just can't draw!" Her teacher encourages Vashti to make a mark, any kind of mark, on a piece of paper. Frustrated, Vashti makes a tiny little black dot on a piece of white paper and it is that slight pen stroke, and some real encouragement from her teacher, that helps Vashti develop the confidence to try all sorts of art projects. Color illustrations accompany the text.

Publishers Weekly
"Reynolds pulls of exactly what his young heroine does, crating an impressive work from deceptively simple beginnings." 10/20/2003
