From the time he is a young boy, Neftali hears the call of a mysterious voice. He knows he must follow it--even when the neighborhood children taunt him, and when his harsh, authoritarian father ridicules him, and when he doubts himself. It leads him under the canopy of the lush rain forest, into the fearsome sea, and through the persistent Chilean rain, until finally, he discovers its source. Illustrations.
From the Publisher:
Winner of the 2011 Pure Belpre Award for fiction now in an elegant paperback edition!

Combining elements of magical realism with biography, poetry, literary fiction, and sensorial, transporting illustrations, Pam Muñoz Ryan and Peter Sís take readers on a rare journey of the heart and imagination.

Annotation:
Pam Munoz Ryan weaves a fictional imagining of poet Pablo Neruda's childhood with this gorgeously written middle grade novel. Born Neftali Reyes, and raised in small Temuco, Chile, Neruda was a smart, bookish child who longed to explore everything. His grim father didn't approve of Neruda's talents, and the boy found solace in his uncle Orlando. In Ryan's world, Neftali spent most of his time alone, forging a shy friendship with another child through a shared fence, trading gifts. Finding inspiration in nature, and an avid reader, the boy's love of writing poetry blossomed quietly over the years. Beautifully accompanied by Peter Sis's delicate illustrations, some of Nerurda's poems are also included.

The illustrations for his 1997 picture-book biography of Galileo, STARRY MESSENGER, earned that book a Caldecott Honor Award. Peter Sis immigrated to the United States in 1982 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1988. His critically acclaimed autobiographical graphic picture book, THE WALL, was a 2008 Caldecott Honor Book.

Praise

"Ryan's fictional evocation of the boy who would become Pablo Neruda is rich, resonant and enchanting." 03/15/2010

"[A]n immaculately crafted and inspiring piece of magical realism." 03/15/2010

"[L]uminous....Pam Munoz Ryan not only hits the highlights of the poet's young life but, through her careful research, exquisite writing and whimsical poems, brings readers into Neruda's curious, sound-enthralled mind....The book is beautifully designed, too....It's a marvelous object to touch and hold, an apt tribute to a poet enamored of things." - Mary Quattlebaum 05/05/2010

"Ryan's hypnotic text, inspired by the childhood of Pablo Neruda, is brought to life by the extraordinary art of Peter Sis." 07/18/2010
