Available in trade paperback for the first time, here is the brilliant story of Esther the White, a Russian migr who chooses to live cut off from normal human experience. And only by calling upon all the healing powers of love can the members of Esther's family make peace with themselves and each other.
From the Publisher:
The matriarch of a Long Island clan with a stubbornly suicidal son and a defiant, restless granddaughter, Esther has hired a Russian landscaper to watch over the family as well as the grounds of their secluded waterfront estate. But he has been watching Esther, too. And his love for her is growing wild enough to uproot them all.

The author of Here on Earth and The River King presents a "stunning and hypnotic" novel that "interweaves past and present with piercing images and unfailing energy" (Publishers Weekly).
Annotation:
This early Alice Hoffman novel tells the story of Esther the White, the cold and distant matriarch of a wealthy Russian émigré family on Long Island, and the devastating effect of her self-willed isolation on her son and granddaughter.
Author Bio
Alice Hoffman
Hoffman is the daughter of a real estate salesman and a social worker. When they divorced, she was raised by her mother on Long Island. A voracious reader, Hoffman has had a lifelong interest in magic and fairy tales, and her reading has had an obvious effect on her own writing, which tends to incorporate fantasy and myth. She has a B.A. from Adelphi College and an M.F.A. from Stanford.
