Eight-year-old Henry and nine-year-old Chin love to read about heroes in popular "penny dreadful" novels, until they both witness real courage while trying to survive the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Reprint.
Laurence Yep began his writing career at age 18 when one of his short science fiction stories was published. He attended Marquette University and graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He also has a doctorate in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His first book, SWEETWATER, was published in 1973. Two of his works, DRAGONWINGS and DRAGON'S GATE, have been named Newbery Honor Books.
"[T]his is solid historical fiction...It is notable especially for the attention paid to the experience of San Francisco's Chinese immigrants, and a good choice for reluctant readers." 03/01/2006
