Not long ago in a large university town in California, on a street called Orchard Avenue, a strange old man ran a dusty shabby store. (from the first line)
| "The deserted storage yard and shed behind the A-Z Antique and Curio Shop becomes the Land of Egypt for April and Melanie, who spend every available moment playing the Egypt game. . . . Eventually other children are drawn into the game which culminates in the capture of a murderer. . . . The book has originality, and verve in plot, style, and characterization."--"School Library Journal" starred review. |
|
From the Publisher:
When eleven-year-old April and her friend Melanie invent a game about ancient Egypt, strange things start happening, and the girls worry that their game has gone too far. |
Annotation:
The A-Z Antique Shop is a shabby store run by a taciturn older man known as the Professor. The shop's abandoned storage yard features a few curios and soon draws the attention of 11-year-old April Hall, her friend Melanie Ross, and Melanie's younger brother, Marshall. Inspired by their mutual love of Egypt, April and Melanie turn the storage yard into the land of Egypt--a land filled with altars, oracles, and sacred rituals created by the girls. Joined by a few other neighborhood kids, play in the land of Egypt turns serious when it seems that the oracle they have created actually has the ability to answer questions. Further complicating the situation is the murder of a local girl--and the fact that her killer is still roaming the neighborhood. A celebration of creativity, imagination, individuality, and friendship, THE EGYPT GAME is a 1968 Newbery Honor Book and is illustrated with occasional B&W paintings. A sequel, THE GYPSY GAME, continues the adventures of April and her friends.
