Denise Fleming's career as an artist began when she was in the third grade and one of her paintings was reproduced on the cover of a magazine for teachers. Her career in children's publishing began in 1984 when she illustrated Alice Low's ALL THROUGH THE TOWN. The first book she both wrote and illustrated was 1991's IN THE TALL, TALL GRASS. Many of Fleming's picture book illustrations are "pulp paintings" which are created by forcing colored cotton pulp through hand-cut stencils. Her 1993 work IN THE SMALL, SMALL POND was named a Caldecott Honor Book.
"Entertaining and educational, this is sure to please old fans and new....It truly has everything."
"...Fleming has created a hard-to-resist browsing book, and children just learning to manipulate paper pages will find a treat at every turn."
