From the Publisher:

There was once a small pumpkin
in a great big field,
A very small green pumpkin
the size of an apple.

The little pumpkin dreams that one day he will grow up to be a fierce yellow pumpkin who scares the field mice, like the scarecrow does.

Then one day in autumn, three children come to his field, and he unexpectedly gets the chance for his dream to come true. . . .

This long-lost treasure from the author of Goodnight Moon has never before been published. Who Better to bring it to life than Caldecott Medalist Richard Egielski? His rich, warm illustrations are the perfect complement to the inimitable words of Margaret Wise Brown.

Author Bio
Richard Egielski
Richard Egielski attended the High School of Art and Design and later studied at both the Pratt Institute and Parsons. He was encouraged to enter the field of children's book illustration by author/illustrator Maurice Sendak, one of his instructors at Parsons. He is well known for his illustrations for books by Arthur Yorinks, one of which--HEY AL--won the Caldecott Medal in 1987. Egielski has also illustrated the works of such authors as Pam Conrad.

Margaret Wise Brown, best known for GOODNIGHT MOON, the enduring classic given to every new parent, wrote over 100 books for children and was a pioneer in the areas of children's literature and education. Though many of her books featured bunnies and other fluffy creatures, she belonged to the Buckram Beagles, a Long Island hunting club. Brown won the Caldecott Medal in 1947 for THE LITTLE ISLAND. She died tragically young, at the age of 42 of an embolism following a routine operation.

Praise

New York Times Book Review
"Margaret Wise Brown's story...is observant, imaginative and more than a bit quaint....[illustrator Richard Egielski] has brought a gentle ingenuity to the project that suits the story beautifully." - Susan Marie Swanson 10/19/2003
