Annotation Jonathan R. Cole, former dean and provost of Columbia University, has composed a compelling paean to the great tradition of American research universities, a history which he claims is now threatened by apathy and underfunding. Cole begins with a comprehensive history of the university system in the United States, which originally served as a training ground for ministers and teachers, but began to shift towards research and development in 1876 with the founding of Johns Hopkins University. The American model soon became the world standard for education and scientific research, spawning a series of technological advances which caused industrial magnates like Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller to fill the coffers of various institutions in the hopes of producing more innovations. After providing an extensive list of some of the essential breakthroughs which came from research schools, including lasers, G.P.S. technology, radar, and the software behind Google and Facebook, Cole calls for Americans to increase their attention and their donations to this neglected resource.
