Annotation:
Jonathan R. Cole, former dean and provost of Columbia University, has composed a compelling paean to the great tradition of American research universities, a history which he claims is now threatened by apathy and underfunding. Cole begins with a comprehensive history of the university system in the United States, which originally served as a training ground for ministers and teachers, but began to shift towards research and development in 1876 with the founding of Johns Hopkins University. The American model soon became the world standard for education and scientific research, spawning a series of technological advances which caused industrial magnates like Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller to fill the coffers of various institutions in the hopes of producing more innovations. After providing an extensive list of some of the essential breakthroughs which came from research schools, including lasers, G.P.S. technology, radar, and the software behind Google and Facebook, Cole calls for Americans to increase their attention and their donations to this neglected resource.

Praise

"An elegant, comprehensive examination of how American universities became the best in the world, and why research matters....Especially compelling are examples of innovation emerging from research centers that have profoundly changed our lives, from genetics to Google." (starred review) 11/01/2009

"In his capacious, candid, and compelling...book, THE GREAT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, Cole explains the emergence of the research university; provides an eye-popping account of the discoveries made by professors in the last half century; and assesses the threats that place higher education in the United States 'at risk of losing its dominant status.'
