From a Newbery Medalist. Humorous and heartfelt, this is a story of pairs--of Sybil and Nula (now estranged sisters who grew up together in Ireland) and Naomi and Lizzie (both orphans in present-day USA) and unraveling mysteries about family and identity.
From the Publisher:
Traces the parallel stories of estranged Irish sisters Sybil and Nula and American orphans Naomi and Lizzie, whose respective explorations into their identities and struggles with misfortune are told in rotating voices. By the Newbery Medal-winning author of Walk Two Shoes. 50,000 first printing.
Annotation:
Overlapping stories set in the United States and Ireland are carefully entwined in Sharon Creech's magical coming-of-age story about healing lives torn apart by accidents, death, and anger. The American town of Blackbird Tree is home to a handful of oddballs, including best friends Naomi and Lizzie. Both orphans, they see the world very differently, Naomi with a realistic, almost cynical edge, while Lizzie chooses to see only joy. Fervently hoping that her foster parents will adopt her, Lizzie longs for permanence, and Naomi is lovingly cared for by Nula and Joe. When a strange boy named Finn falls out of a tree, seemingly from nowhere, the girls are enchanted by him. Soon, they begin to unfold a mystery that links Finn to Nula, and Naomi feels the stirrings of her first crush. Meanwhile, in Ireland, an old woman named Sybil has a quiet rage from the past that involves love lost. The two tales come together in a surprising, incredible way. Creech won the Newbery Medal for WALK TWO MOONS.

Praise

"An enchanting tale to treasure in which ordinary folk find fairies' gold, run across crooked bridges and mend their broken hearts." 08/01/2012

"Creech's emotional intelligence will win over parents too. A key character's advice for curing heartsickness? 'You drink some hot tea with a dollop of honey in it, and then go out and run fast and hard.' I hope my daughters long remember that one." - Elizabeth Weil 11/11/2012
