John Evans stood with his hands jammed into his pockets in the open doorway of his wife's hospital room. He was instantly aware of two things: first, that his wife looked like she'd been arranged in the bed. She wore her frilly bed-jacket and her long golden hair had been placed just so over her shoulders. Lipstick and rouge were evident as though she were waiting for a special visitor. He sniffed. Perfume, too. The second thing he noticed was the silence, a little like the first ten minutes before mass got underway at St. Gabriel's. (from the first line)
| Satisfied with her life and a new relationship, Abby Mitchell is most happy to be reunited with her sister, who was separated from her after their parents died. The siblings are planning a sumptuous party, unaware that an uninvited guest is coming, one who'll do anything to help keep the past hidden. |
Author Bio
Fern Michaels
Fern Michaels grew up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, got married, and had five children before she picked up a pen to begin writing what would turn out be one best-selling romance after another. One of the most consistent bestselling romance writers of the '80s and '90s, Michaels writes mostly steamy historical romances with heavy doses of passion, seduction, and torrid adultery. Divorced from her first husband, she dedicates much of her time to philanthropic concerns, having set up the Fern Michaels Foundation, which grants scholarships to students in need. She also set up affordable pre-school and day-care centers for struggling single mothers.
