On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated and enraged and anguished Americans took to the streets. On April 5, James Brown was scheduled to perform at Boston Garden. Concerned about security in the wake of rioting in the Roxbury neighborhood (that the city hoped to contain there), the concert was on the brink of falling through. But in an historical deal that some say saved Boston, Brown insisted on performing and agreed to televise the concert, a rare treat for viewers at home. That night the city experienced no more violence. Focusing on this seminal night, James Sullivan has written a thought-provoking biography of the Godfather of Soul. Chuck D. of Public Enemy provides the introduction.
