Author Bio
Herbert Benson M.D.
Herbert Benson is widely regarded as a trailblazer in the science of mind/body medicine. His studies in the body's fight or flight response brought widespread attention to the healing potential of the mind, which was not previously regarded as fodder for medical discussion. A 1961 graduate of Harvard Medical school, Benson went on to become a prominent Boston-area physician who specialized in hypertension and behavioral medicine. In 1975, Benson published THE RELAXATION RESPONSE, what was the first of many books he penned exploring the subject. In this bestseller, Benson presented clinical research proving that relaxation techniques (such as meditation and applied breathing) create a chemical change in the body that has a positive impact on physical health and could reverse common stress-related ailments. This is regarded as a groundbreaking work in terms of the Western world's acceptance of the mind/body connection. ||Benson, who has won numerous awards and honors (including a presidential citation from the American Psychological Association), has raised millions of dollars to advance science's understanding of the mind/body connection. In a career marked by tireless dedication, Benson has traveled as far and Tibet and China to study relaxation and meditation techniques in an effort to bridge the gap between Western science and Eastern spirituality. He is the founder of the Mind Body Medical Institute through Harvard University, which continues to conduct research on the effects of relaxation on the body.
