She doesn't know what to do with her eyes. The front door of the building is too scarred and gouged to look at, and the street behind her is improbably empty, as if the city had been evacuated and she's the only one who didn't hear about it. There is always the game at moments like this to distract her. (from the first line)

Annotation:
In this bizarre world, the control of the Elevators Inspectors is sought by two rival groups, the Empiricists (traditional technicians) and the Intuitionists (who feel the elevators' psychic vibrations). One of the Intuitionists, Lila Mae Watson, who is black, is suspected of negligence when one of her approved elevators malfunctions, as a result of which her life is disrupted by false accusations, physical attacks, and a troubling romance.
