Product Overview

#1 "NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLER
The Office of the Public Defender is not known as a training ground for bright young litigators. Clay Carter has been there too long and, like most of his colleagues, dreams of a better job in a real firm. When he reluctantly takes the case of a man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit D.C. every week.
As he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life--that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession''s newest king of torts.

John Grisham
John Grisham woke up at 5:00 every morning for three years to complete his first novel, A TIME TO KILL. Working as a lawyer and a member of Mississippi's state legislature, Grisham published his debut thriller with a small and somewhat unknown publisher, receiving only local readership in his home state. He finally burst on to the national scene with his second novel, THE FIRM, a legal thriller that sold millions of copies and stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for 47 weeks. Shortly afterward, Grisham moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where he began working on a series of new legal thrillers, including THE PELICAN BRIEF and THE CLIENT, all of which became bestsellers and were subsequently made into successful films. Having graduated from the University of Mississippi in Oxford with a law degree in 1981, Grisham went on to base his popular thrillers on his experience as a specialist in criminal defense. His once-unknown debut, A TIME TO KILL, was made into a major motion picture in 1996.
Praise
"The arc of Clay's swift rise and fall is predictable yet suspenseful. Grisham's male characters are thin, the females thinner, but the novel's very trimness is its distinctive virtue."
From the Publisher
Annotation Grisham again goes after greedy tort lawyers who accumulate enormous fees in class-action settlements against corporations, with hardly anything left for the corporations' actual victims. In this novel, lawyer Clay Carter is offered a role in the case of a teenager who has shot and killed a fellow student after taking a drug that has been suspected of causing similar psychotic episodes. Offered a small fortune by the pharmaceutical company in question, Clay succumbs to greed and rises to his dubious position as "king of torts"--losing his moral fiber and the woman he loves in the process.
First Line The shots that fired the bullets that entered Pumpkin's head were heard by no less than eight people.
