Born Samuel Shepard Rogers VII, Shepard attended Mount Antonio Junior College in 1960, but did not complete his undergraduate degree. Instead, he worked as a stablehand, actor, and rock musician. Shepard's plays have earned him more than 10 Obie Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and a Palme d'Or. A veteran of stage and screen, he has been married to actress Jessica Lange, with whom he had two daughters.
