Author Info
Alan Dean Foster
Though born in New York City, Alan Dean Foster was raised in Los Angeles. He attended UCLA, graduating in 1968 with a degree in political science and the next year with a master's degree in cinema. Also in 1968, he sold his first fictional work, a long H. P. Lovecraft-inspired story called "The Horror of the Beach." After he graduated, his love of the exotic led him to French Polynesia for a year, where he lived with a Tahitian family. He continued to write short stories until his first novel, THE TAR-AIYM KING, was published in 1974. He has continued to write numerous short works in a variety of styles--westerns, horror, and mystery, as well as science fiction and fantasy--and has become one of the most sought-after writers in the field of movie novelizations. One of his first novels of this type was 1976's STAR WARS, which Foster wrote under the name of the film's director, George Lucas. In 1978 he wrote the first--and some consider the best--of the Star Wars novels, SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE. Icerigger and Flinx, his two best-known series, are notable for both their standpoints on ecology, and their sly humor. In addition to writing, Foster has traveled extensively, studied karate with Chuck Norris, taught film and screenwriting at the college level, and even filmed footage--in a professional capacity--of Great White sharks off of Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
"[A] lighthearted SF romp."
From the Publisher
First Line Marcus Walker's khirach-tel souffle had fallen, and couldn't get up.
Annotation In this wacky space opera, second volume of the Taken trilogy, a human abducted by aliens faces new challenges as he struggles back across the galaxy toward Earth. Having been rescued from the Vilenjji, a group of aliens who kidnapped him with the intention of selling him as a pet on a distant planet, Chicago commodities trader Marcus "Marc" Walker and his former fellow captives/newfound friends--talking dog George; giant, versifying Braouk; and brilliant, sardonic Sque--settle on the planet Seremathenn, the genteel, technologically sophisticated home of their saviors. Needing something to do, George trains as a chef, and his culinary skills as well as his novelty value attract another alien race, the Niyyuu, who invite him to their planet, where the political system is built around a highly structured civil war that has been ongoing for 9,000 years.
Editors Note Kidnapped by aliens to be sold as a pet in a distant part of the galaxy, young Chicago commodities broker Marcus Walker and his companion, George, a speech-enhanced dog, have managed to outwit their abductors, only to find themselves stranded billions of miles from Earth, with no way home. Reprint.
Editors Note 3 Successful Chicago commodities broker abducted by aliens Not a headline from the National Enquirer, just Marcus Walker’s own little Jerry Springer moment. He was indeed hustled aboard an alien Vilenjji starship, part of a cargo of primitive creatures bound for the “civilized” part of the galaxy, where they’ll be sold . . . as pets. Fortunately, there was another Earthling aboard, a scruffy dog named George who’d been speech-enhanced to increase his market value. Walker had spoken to plenty of dogs in his line of work but never to actual animals. He and George formed an immediate bond, giving new meaning to “man’s best friend.”The Light-Years Beneath My Feet finds Walker and George free at last, having managed, with some outside help, to outwit their kidnappers. But now they are a million billion miles from Earth. Walker glories in the wonders of his rescuers’ hi-tech world and the thrill of being humankind’s first galactic traveler–until he remembers the only place he wants to be is home. To take his mind off the depressing fact that he hasn’t the slightest idea where home is, never mind how to get there, the erstwhile commodities broker becomes a chef.Walker never imagined that whipping up delicacies for demanding alien palates would lead to a possible way home–or that the possible way home would involve swapping his easy-living adopted planet for an all-out, age-old war many parsecs away. But hey, it was all for a good cause, he has George and their two fellow escapees for company, and what else was there to do, besides avoid Vilenjji? Plenty, as it turns out. . . .From the Hardcover edition.
