Connelly's instant #1 New York Times bestseller comes to paperback. "A powerhouse drama...Connelly has mastered the form of the legal thriller on his very first try."--New York Times Book Review.

From the Publisher:
New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly delivers his first legal thriller--an incendiary tale about a cynical defense attorney whose one remaining spark of integrity may cost him his life.

Mickey Haller has spent all his professional life afraid that he wouldn't recognize innocence if it stood right in front of him. But what he should have been on the watch for was evil.<

Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense pro who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, to defend the clients at the bottom of the legal food chain. It's no wonder that he is despised by cops, prosecutors, and even some of his own clients.

From bikers to con artists to drunk drivers and drug dealers, they're all on Mickey Haller's client list. But when a Beverly Hills rich boy is arrested for brutally beating a woman, Haller has his first high-paying client in years. It's a franchise case and he's sure it will be a slam dunk in the courtroom. For once, he may be defending a client who is actually innocent.

But an investigator is murdered for getting too close to the truth and Haller quickly discovers that his search for innocence has taken him face-to-face with a kind of evil as pure as a flame. To escape without being burned, Haller must use all of his skills to manipulate a system in which he no longer believes.

Annotation:
Although fans of Michael Connelly's popular and critically praised Harry Bosch series won't find their favorite police detective in this legal thriller, they'll enjoy getting to know the half-brother Harry's never met, California defense lawyer Mickey Haller, who runs his office out of his Lincoln Town Car. Mickey doesn't worry too much about the actual guilt or innocence of his disreputable clientele. Instead, he prefers to concentrate on locating the loopholes in the prosecution's case and keeping an eye on his bottom line. Mickey's priorities undergo a radical shift--too late, perhaps--when he manages to land a rich client accused of assaulting a woman at a bar, and discovers that the apparently slam-dunk case has an extremely unpleasant price tag attached to it.

Kirkus Reviews
"[V]eteran crime novelist Connelly offers intrigue and bracing twists in his first legal thriller....Connelly gets the legal details and maneuvers just right, and Haller is a great character....Contains everything readers have come to expect from powerhouse Connelly." 08/01/2005

New York Times Book Review
"Many a series sleuth has been sidelined by a gut shot so an author can wander off an explore a new genre....[E]very so often that literary leap produces something remarkable, like Michael Connelly's first legal thriller, THE LINCOLN LAWYER....Mastering the form on his first try, Connelly delivers a powerhouse drama." - Marilyn Stasio 10/09/2005

Literary Review
"Potent....Brilliantly plotted and played out, with court scenes...which winch up the tension to the breaking point. New territory for Connelly, author of the peerless Harry Bosch series, but immediately expert, exciting and absorbing. Connelly writes the kind of book that dares you to put it down. Chances are that you won't." - Philip Oakes November 2005
