Customer Reviews of The Power Of Habit - Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business
Wow an amazing book5/17/2012
I was intrigued when I read the review about how I would personally benefit from the information in this book. I'm glad I was! The book has helped me indentify habits and such and hopefully I'll yet make the choice to put some action to my knowledge (don't we wish there was a book for that). But the section on The Habits of Successful Organizations has blown me away. I'm actively putting some of it's concept to work at my organization. A great read well worth the price!!!
Unqiue, Useful & Informative5/17/2012
We all vaguely know we have "habits" but this book really examines what habits truly are. What do Peposodent, Febreze, Alcoholics Anonymous and the Alcoa corporation have in common? They all understood HABITS. -- how habits are triggered and how to change them. The big accomplishment of this book, is that it presents scholarly work WITHOUT BEING BORING. The author covers the "habits of societies" -- oh it really gets interesting here! How movements begin & spread. How corporations manipulate our habits. The positive role of routines in the organization of human work. You'll never think of your daily "routines" in the same way. Fabulous, fascinating book which will help people understand and change their habits.
reading this book has become a habit5/17/2012
I'm about half way through this book, and it has become a habit, replacing ken ken as my going to bed ritual. reading it on an iphone is a bit tedious but not too bad because the author's style is fast-paced and breezy. I think his belief and group theory could use more elaboration...I believe beliefs are based largely on prior experience ..i.e. I know it will work this time because I've done something similar in the past, and groups work better because there is a greater likelihood that someone in the group has had the experience before and will be able to persuade the others of his/her thinking. In any case, a great read, great examples, and I look forward to finishing the book, at which time, I will be craving something else by the same author.
very interesting reading5/11/2012
I had no trouble staying awake reading this book - I found the subject matter fascinating. It is written in an easy to read, understandable style and the author stays true to the theme of the book: illustrating just how powerful habits are in our lives. Of course since they are habits, we go about them without really giving them much thought; the key is to indeed recognize and give them thought, and work on how to improve ourselves by changing or modifying those habits. The author provides interesting and relevant examples of major behavior changes brought about by recognizing habits, and also provides us with the key to how to change them. I found this book useful not only for examining my own behavior, and providing the motivation (and the means) for changing my own bad habits, but also found it useful to think about how others are trying to do the same thing to me - in other words, how others (such as advertisers) are attempting to manipulate my behavior.
