When 12-year-old Jason--the last person known to see a young murdered girl alive--is suspected of her murder, the police bring in an expert interrogator, a man who always gets a confession. When they meet face to face, the truth will come out. A "Publishers Weekly" Best Book.
Author Bio
Robert Cormier
Before becoming a writer for young adults, Robert Cormier worked as a journalist and wrote three novels for adults. He is well known for his young adult novels, which focus on such realistic themes as murder, sex, and terminal illness. Many of his works, such as THE CHOCOLATE WAR, feature teenage characters faced with situations where they refuse to compromise their ideals. Readers are not guaranteed a happy ending in novels by Cormier, but rather a realistic ending--the ending that he feels is dictated by the story.

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Cormier uses deft dialogue and alternating perspectives to create tense and twisted scenes between two characters...The pacing is riveting, and the chapters that cover the interrogation raise intense ethical questions about power, fairness, and truth." December 2001

Riverbank Review
"This is a riveting read, not for the faint of heart." - Lee Galda Spring 2002

Kirkus Reviews
"[A] tense thriller....Highly discussible, the ethical questions contained are intricate and absorbing, but detract not at all from the increasing tension as the story unfolds. Chilling." 10/01/2001
