From the Publisher:
Risking her life to protect the First Lady of the United States, Quinn Star stumbles upon a bizarre conspiracy on the part of ruthless advisors to hide the president's debilitating illness to seek their own political agenda, but her efforts to stop the plots could be undermined by the reappearance of an old lover. Original. With her bestselling mix of thrilling twists and characters to cheer for, Fern Michaels delves inside Washington, D.C.'s halls of power -- and into the heart of an independent woman driven by passion and bound by duty.

Raised by her loving but eccentric aunt, former F.B.I. agent Quinn Star has always relied on herself -- how else could she have survived the Bureau's old boys network, or navigated the heartbreak of a thwarted affair with her boss? Now Quinn risks her life every day in the Secret Service, protecting the First Lady of the United States. Only she can't safeguard her from the ruthless advisors intent on hiding the President's debilitating illness for their political gain. Suspecting a conspiracy that places the fate of the President, his wife -- and the nation -- on the line, Quinn whisks the First Lady out of the capital to her South Carolina home. But nowhere is truly safe from whoever is pulling the strings in a lethal game designed to keep Quinn from uncovering the truth. And no one can tell Quinn if she should risk her heart when a lover emerges from the shadows of the past....

Annotation:
In this bestselling work of romantic suspense, a Secret Service agent must untangle both a deadly conspiracy and her complicated feelings for an ex-lover. The misogyny in the office and an ill-advised affair with her boss, Ezra "Puff" Lapufsky, impelled Quinn Star to leave the FBI. She painstakingly makes a new life for herself, teaching law at Georgetown and becoming engaged to another man. Suddenly, Puff reenters Quinn's life and offers her the job she's always dreamed about: an assignment with the Secret Service protecting the First Lady, who is threatened by a plot against the White House.
Author Bio
Fern Michaels
Fern Michaels grew up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, got married, and had five children before she picked up a pen to begin writing what would turn out be one best-selling romance after another. One of the most consistent bestselling romance writers of the '80s and '90s, Michaels writes mostly steamy historical romances with heavy doses of passion, seduction, and torrid adultery. Divorced from her first husband, she dedicates much of her time to philanthropic concerns, having set up the Fern Michaels Foundation, which grants scholarships to students in need. She also set up affordable pre-school and day-care centers for struggling single mothers.
