Annotation:
In 1768, a gunsmith lovingly and skillfully builds a rifle which he sells to a man who uses it to fight for America's independence during the Revolutionary War. When the soldier dies, a woman inherits the rifle and hides it in her attic where it remains hidden until 1994, when it is found and sold to an antiques dealer. The antiques dealer sells it to a man at a gun show, that man trades it to a mechanic. The mechanic hangs the gun above his fireplace...and it is soon after that a tragedy occurs.

Praise
Kirkus Reviews
"Paulsen is at the peak of his powers in a book that is as shattering as the awful events it depicts. Unforgettable." 09/01/1995 Voya
"Paulsen's writing talent makes the various minor characters and the technical detail he provides about the creation and use of a flintlock rifle interesting and understandable. It also makes his message unmistakable and powerful." - Chris Crowe February 1996
