Michael Connelly
Michael Connelly's best-known novels feature Hieronymous "Harry" Bosch, an LAPD detective who is relentless in his efforts to solve cold cases. Connelly feels that crime fiction performs an important function. "The world has become more confusing. It has also become more dangerous," he has said. "These books tend to follow a standard in which justice prevails. This is reassuring. I think we all look at the world and see that bad people often get away. [But] that doesn't happen too often in fiction." Connelly, who was born in Philadelphia, decided to become a crime writer after reading the works of Raymond Chandler as a teen. He earned a degree in journalism, and after being short-listed for a Pulitzer, for a 1986 story about a plane crash that he had written for a Florida newspaper, he was offered a job at the Los Angeles Times, where he remained until the mid-1990s. His first Harry Bosch novel, THE BLACK ECHO (1992), garnered an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America, an organization that Connelly would later head. Since that first outing, Bosch has been the focus of several other books, most of them bestsellers. Connelly's other series protagonist is Mickey Haller, a Los Angeles defense attorney who works out of his car. The character was introduced in THE LINCOLN LAWYER (2005), which was made into a film starring Matthew McConaughey in 2011. That did not mark the first time Connelly's work had been adapted for the big screen, however; in 2002 BLOOD WORK, a 1998 non-series novel about an ex-FBI agent who receives a heart transplant, had been filmed by Clint Eastwood. Besides seeing his characters brought to life by Hollywood, Connelly has also had the distinction of portraying himself in an episode of the ABC-TV series CASTLE.
Praise
"This magnificent effort is a reminder of why Connelly is one of today's top crime authors." (starred review)
"Connelly...has the nerve and timing of a whole SWAT team...."
"THE SCARECROW, a return to form for Mr. Connelly and his sharpest book since THE LINCOLN LAWYER, pivots energetically among its subplots, often returning affectionately to the newspaper world."
"[A] headlong race to maintain narrative momentum. I mean that as high praise. Connelly is an excellent mystery writer...."
"[A] riveting thriller with a flawed, fully fleshed hero, a nasty serial killer and the expected page-turning tension..."
"THE SCARECROW is a dire warning about the dangers of electronic snooping and a reminder of what we will lose if newspapers continue to fail. And it is a page-turning thriller--cleverly plotted, fast-paced and crisply written."
From the Publisher
Annotation There is no way Jack McEvoy will quietly resign from the Los Angeles Times, where he has worked as a crime journalist for years. No, he's going to show the higher-ups who've given him the pink slip what they will be missing when he's gone by dishing up a ground-breaking story. That's where Alonzo Winslow comes in. This 16-year-old confessed to brutal rape and murder charges, but when Jack looks into the details, Alonzo's story quickly falls to pieces. Following leads across state lines, Jack needs FBI agent Rachel Walling's help to crack a case that grows more and more dangerous every step they take. With the crumbling newspaper industry and a sinister, all-pervasive digital technology infrastructure augmenting the already frightening sex-crime investigation, prolific author Michael Connelly offers another killer thriller with THE SCARECROW that's scary on multiple levels and addictive in as many ways. Selected by Publishers Weekly as one of the 100 Best Books of 2009.
Editors Note Pursuing a big story in anticipation of his imminent layoff, Los Angeles reporter Jack McEvoy investigates the murder confession of a teen drug dealer and realizes that the youth may be innocent, a discovery that pits him against a killer operating below police radar with an uncanny knowledge of his enemies. Read by Len Cariou.
