Author Info
C. S. Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis was educated in England, attending Oxford in 1917. World War I interrupted his studies and Lewis served in the trenches for two years. In 1919 he returned to Oxford, where he remained until 1954. An atheist, Lewis converted to Christianity in 1929, and spent his life pursuing many interests: his acclaimed Narnia books and a trilogy of space travel novels; books concerning religion; and an academic career in medieval and renaissance literature. In 1955, Lewis moved on to Magdalen College, Cambridge University; in 1956 he married Joy Davidman Gresham, who died in 1960. Lewis survived her by three years.
From the Publisher
Annotation Eustace and his friend escape from bullies at school through a door in the school yard wall, and find themselves on an open moor in Narnia.
First Line It was a dull autumn day and Jill Pole was crying behind the gym.
Annotation 2 A few English months and many Narnian years separate this follow-up to THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER, the previous installment in the classic children's fantasy series the Chronicles of Narnia. The much-reformed Eustace Scrubb and a schoolmate, Jill Pole, escape from bullies at their entirely horrible boarding school through a door in the wall. Stepping through the door magically transports the children to Narnia's guardian, the talking lion Aslan, who assigns them the task of finding Prince Rilian, the long-lost son and heir to the aged King Caspian. Aided by Puddleglum (the lugubrious marsh-wiggle) and the Signs, four pieces of vital information given to them by Aslan which the children persist in misinterpreting, Eustace and Jill embark upon their quest, which takes them to many strange and dangerous places.
Editors Note Two English children undergo hair-raising adventures as they go on a search and rescue mission for the missing Prince Rilian, who is held captive in the underground kingdom of the Emerald Witch.
