"All right, men!" yelled Coach Tom Kash. "Let's try that play again! You guys on defense, charge in there! Your job is to try to stop Chip from throwing the ball!" (from the first line)
A young, inexperienced football team discovers its beginner's luck is due to a series of mysterious but successful plays anonymously sent to the coach.
From the Publisher:
When inexperienced Phil Wayne takes over as coach of the Cayugans, Chip Chase figures that they're in for a losing season. But Phil surprises everyone by teaching the team a fantastic new play every week -- plays that help them win game after game. Then Phil admits to the boys that each week one play is mailed to him anonymously. Will Chip and his teammates discover who the mystery coach is before the season ends?
Chip Chase and his teammates on the Cayugans football team are sure they're in for a losing season when inexperienced Phil Wayne takes over as their coach. Happily, Coach Wayne surprises everyone by coming up with great new plays each week, enabling the Cayugans to crush their opposition. Then Coach Wayne admits that he's not making up the plays--someone is mailing them to him anonymously. Determined to find out who is coaching his team, Chip sets out to discover who is coaching Coach Wayne.

Matt Christopher
Matt Christopher was a semiprofessional baseball player until an injury permanently benched him. His first book, THE LUCKY BASEBALL BAT, was published in 1954. Christopher's specialty is writing children's books with a sports theme--not just limited to his personal specialty, baseball, but also football, hockey, basketball, and a variety of other sports. His more recent works, while still focusing on a sports theme, have also added elements of mystery, fantasy, and the supernatural.
