The Testing (Hardcover)
|Author: Joelle Charbonneau|
|In the dystopian society of the Five Lakes Colony (formerly the Great Lakes), it''s an honor to be chosen for The Testing. But it''s not enough to pass the Test. Sixteen-year-old Cia will have to survive it.|
From the Publisher:
Who will be chosen to lead? The best...the brightest...the deadliest? There will be a testing. In the wake of the Seven Stages War, the government of the Unified Commonwealth devised The Testing to assess the instinct, intellect and sheer nerve among a select group of the population's young people. Candidates who pass, attend the University to become leaders of the Commonwealth; civilization's hope to transform a post-war wasteland into a peaceful and technologically advanced society. But progress comes at a price. Mechanically-inclined Cia Vale is honored to be chosen as a candidate but on the eve of her departure, her father confides partial memories of his grisly experience as a candidate, still haunted by nightmares and living in fear of what he can't remember. It's not enough to pass the test, Cia will have to survive it and her deadly fellow candidates. To stay alive Cia will have to learn who she can trust and, if necessary, who she must kill.
Reminiscent of the Hunger Games trilogy, THE TESTING is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the Seven Stages War reduced everything to a desolate wasteland. In order to attend University and become part of the treasured few hard at work returning the world to its former glory, hopeful teens must take part in The Testing. Along with three lucky others, Cia Vale is a candidate eager for a brighter future. The physical and mental intensity, not to mention the body count, required by The Testing is meant to separate the few worthy ones from the herd. Cia's treasured childhood friend, Tomas, could be the key to her survival, or the path to failure. This is the first in a trilogy.
Customer Reviews of The Testing
Well Written and Action Packed9/25/2014
I was curious when I saw this book. When I read the summary I was intrigued, because it seemed similar to Hunger Games and Divergent. I loved the first book of the Hunger Games, but hated how Collins ended the series. I decided to give this book a shot. I didn't realize that the three books were all already out. Charbonneau does a great job of taking you through the events that led up to them having the Testing, She also does a great job with the backgrounds of the characters and the areas they live in. The events of the testing are full of surprises and twists. There is lots of action and Charbonneau doesn't disappoint. The beginning is a bit reminiscent of Hunger Games and Divergent, but becomes its own adventure. I look forward to reading the next book. I would recommend this book anyone. If you like the Hunger Games or Divergent, you will love this page turner. Charbonneau seemed to enjoy writing this book. Can't wait to see how the series ends.
