Author Bio
Thorstein Veblen
The phrase "conspicuous consumption"--from Veblen's classic text, "The Theory of the Leisure Class"--has become part of the everyday vernacular. Thorstein Veblen was educated at Johns Hopkins University and Yale. He taught at the universities of Chicago and Missouri, as well as Stanford. Like fellow liberal progressive John Dewey, Veblen is associated with the Chicago school of social science. His economics were informed by psychological and sociological knowledge, and simultaneously contributed to and expanded on all three. Thorstein left academia and moved to New York City, where he wrote articles.
