Product Overview

From the Publisher:
Explosive in both its pace and its revelations, The Third Secret is a remarkable international thriller. Bestselling author Steve Berry tackles some of the most controversial ideas of our time in a breakneck journey through the history of the Church and the future of religion.

Fatima, Portugal, 1917: The Virgin Mary appears to three peasant children, sharing with them three secrets, two of which are soon revealed to the world. The third secret is sealed away in the Vatican, read only by popes, and not disclosed until the year 2000. When revealed, its quizzical tone and anticlimactic nature leave many faithful wondering if the Church has truly unveiled all of the Virgin Mary's words -- or if a message far more important has been left in the shadows.

Vatican City, present day: Papal secretary Father Colin Michener is concerned for the Pope. Night after restless night, Pope Clement XV enters the Vatican's Riserva, the special archive open only to popes, where the Church's most clandestine and controversial documents are stored. Though unsure of the details, Michener knows that the Pope's distress stems from the revelations of Fatima.

Equally concerned, but not out of any sense of compassion, is Alberto Cardinal Valendrea, the Vatican's Secretary of State,. Valendrea desperately covets the papacy, having narrowly lost out to Clement at the last conclave. Now the Pope's interest in Fatima threatens to uncover a shocking ancient truth that Valendrea has kept to himself for many years.

When Pope Clement sends Michener to the Romanian highlands, then to a Bosnian holy site, in search of a priest-possibly one of the last people on Earth who knows Mary's true message -- a perilous set of events unfolds. Michener finds himself embroiled in murder, suspicion, suicide, deceit, and his forbidden passion for a beloved woman. In a desperate search for answers, he travels to Pope Clement's birthplace in Germany, where he learns that the third secret of Fatima may dictate the very fate of the Church -- a fate now lying in Michener's own hands

Steve Berry
Steve Berry has asserted that he received 85 rejection notices before his first historical thriller, THE AMBER ROOM, was published in 2003. It is safe to assume that his mail has included few such letters since then. The author of the popular Cotton Malone series, he now has millions of books in print and makes regular appearances on the bestseller list. Berry was born in Atlanta and attended Valdosta State University, graduating in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in political science. Three years later he earned a degree from the Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law. Although he embarked on a successful career as a trial attorney, he harbored a deep desire to write. His first few manuscripts were rejected repeatedly, but in 2000 and 2001 he won fiction-writing contests sponsored by the Georgia State Bar, and his short stories were published in the organization's journal. In 2002, after a dozen years of trying, he finally sold a full-length manuscript, and the following year THE AMBER ROOM, a thriller about artworks the Nazis had looted from Russia, hit bookstores. In 2006 he published THE TEMPLAR LEGACY, the first Cotton Malone book. Malone is affiliated with the Magellan Billet, a secretive division of the Department of Justice, and his fictional adventures have taken him to the Middle East, China, and Paris, among other locales. Berry has said, "My thrillers center around one theme: something vital has been lost in the past and must be found today. That ?something' varies from book to book--things like the body of Alexander of the Great [and] the first emperor of China's tomb." A passionate history buff, he does intensive research for each book, and he and his wife, Elizabeth, are the co-founders of History Matters, a group dedicated to raising funds for preservation and conservation.

From the Publisher
Editors Note Haunted by the secrets revealed in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal, the obsession of Pope Clement XV leads to intrigue at the Vatican as Alberto Cardinal Valendrea, the Vatican's Secretary of State, plots to bring down the troubled pontiff.
Annotation A hidden revelation from the Virgin Mary and intrigue within the Vatican kick off a crisis for the seated Pope and his loyal secretary in this thriller by the bestselling author of THE AMBER ROOM and THE ROMANOV PROPHECY. In 1917, the Virgin Mary entrusted three secrets to a Portuguese peasant girl. The girl divulged two of the secrets, but directed that the third remain a mystery until 1960. The present-day pope, Clement XV, seems obsessed with and disturbed by that final secret; and dispatches his secretary, Monsignor Colin Michener, in search of the secret's translator, a quest which not only leads to the truth about the three secrets but forces Michener to confront his own troubled past.
