From the Publisher:
Police Inspector Peter Pascoe has stumbled upon the remains of an ancestor unjustly executed in wartime. As he delves into the mystery of his disgraced great-grandfathers death, his partner, Detective Superintendent Andrew Dalziel, is preoccupied with a shapely animal rights activist. Eight female protesters have discovered human bones on the grounds of a drug companys research headquarters, and the investigation has a shocking connection to Pascoe's own family case.Police Inspector Peter Poscoe has stumbled upon the remains of an ancestor unjustly executed in wartime. As he delves into the mystery of his disgraced great-grandfather's death, his partner, Detective Superintendent Andrew Dalziel, is preoccupied with a female animal rights activist. Female protesters have discovered human bones on the grounds of a drug company's research headquarters, and the investigation has a shocking connection to Pascoe's own family case.
Annotation:
Chief Inspector Pascoe has to contend with heated demonstrations at ALBA Pharmaceuticals by animal rights activists that have already resulted in the death of a security guard. A demonstrator accidentally turns up a long-dead corpse that is somehow connected to a Pascoe family secret. How is the Pascoe family connected to the Grindal's and the Batty's who founded ALBA and what is going on with the animal rights protestor's guru-ish leader, who is sleeping with Pascoe's boss? The Chief Inspector is hot on the case to discover how these mysterious occurrences are intertwined.

Praise

Kirkus Reviews
"The richness, depth, and emotional impact of Hill's multiple stories and their labyrinthine connections make such masters of plot as Martha Grimes and P.D. James seem positively niggardly."

Times Literary Supplement
"This is a well-constructed novel...the author's liking for his character is infectious."

Literary Review
"Assembled with enormous relish and exercising a vocabulary not often encountered in crime fiction (when did you last encounter a 'cetaphile' or see someone with 'a bubaline neck'?). Characterization on the far side of robust, with Dalziell growing more Falstaffian with every book. A testimony to the power of positive writing." - Philip Oakes 04/1996
