it was in the middle of the late hours. |twelve fifty-nine to be precise.|The winds howled outside,|and the old house creaked-- (from the first line)
| The antics of a perky prankster in pajamas is a feast of words and pictures. With sly wordplay, atmospheric illustrations, and a baker's dozen of spooky characters, this picture book reminds readers that more fun than fright can be had from things that bump in the night. Full color. |

From the Publisher:
Filled with frightfully zany characters, this entertaining story follows a very normal girl from a slightly normal house where a strange clock counts to thirteen. As a mysterious old clock strikes thirteen, monsters and ghouls appear looking for a snack and a little mischief at the expense of the small girl who lives down the hall. |
Annotation:
This spooky Halloweenesque counting picture book follows the terrific chaos of the clanging and the creatures that erupt when a funky clock hits 13 in a little girl's creepy house. The crazy bonging brings out strange monsters, from leathery, winged creatures to a simple spider--more and more with each strike of the clock. However, they are all in for a big shock when they try to spook a snoozing little girl. Accompanied by inventive, sophisticated black charcoal drawings, occasionally green-tinged, with a great deal of topographical variety that heightens the playful, spooky feeling of the story.

"[An] entertaining, deliciously quirky chronicle...Stimson's stylized pencil illustrations, mostly black-and-white but tinged with mildew-green, recall Lane Smith's work...Innovative designs and varied font sizes add to the fun of this offbeat offering." 10/01/2005 Publishers Weekly
"[P]lenty of typographical pyrotechnics--crooked typesetting, large and small fonts, and occasional hand-lettering--add visual punch. Stimson's free-associating free-verse and bold use of an eclectic, alliterative vocabulary...make this a fine read-aloud choice...." 10/10/2005
