"Unlike many memoirs, 'Threads of Time' is not an occasion for self-revelation....He [Brook] remains, by the end of the book, scrupulously private about most personal matters....But the memoir is also an explicit narrative of his spiritual quest."
"...if this book of memory is the story of a spiritual quest, it is light-heartedly so, easy on the reader, often told at the expense of the protagonist. It includes tantalizing glimpses of how one might go about unlearning habits and forfeiting security to arrive at inspired improvisation. By way of his explorations philosophical and theatrical, Brook has reached an attitude of expectant joy which, with his memories, he shares generously in this book."
"...marvelously evocative and beautifully written memories of his childhood....[T]he contradictions persist in 'Threads of Time', but anyone who cares about theater will be glad of the continuing struggle to resolve them that pushes Brook back again and again to the great testing ground he has made of the stage."
From the Publisher
First Line I could have called this book "False Memories". Not because I want consciously to tell a lie but because the act of writing proves that there is no deep freeze in the brain where memories are stored intact.
Annotation A memoir by the English theatrical producer and film director. Brook concentrates on artistic influences and philosophies, with stories and travel reminiscences, over personal life details and other material of a gossipy nature. A "New York Times" Notable Book for 1998.
Editors Note The noted director traces his career, from directing Shakespeare's dramas, to London's West End, to his work with Laurence Olivier, Salvador Dali, and other giants.
