Joseph Roth

Joseph Roth was born in Austria, and served in the army in World War I. After the war he became a journalist who covered stories all over Europe during the 1920s and early 1930s. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Roth moved to Paris with the proceeds from his novel THE RADETSKY MARCH. He continued to write--and to drink; his alcoholism became legendary. He died of alcohol withdrawal and pneumonia in a Paris hospital at the age of 43.

Joseph Roth was born Moses Joseph Roth in a small, largely Jewish town in Austria. He attended the University of Vienna, but his education there ended with the start of World War I, in which he served in a desk job as a private. After the war he became a journalist who covered stories all over Europe during the 1920s and early 1930s. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Roth moved permanently to Paris--a city he revered, especially in contrast to the increasing nationalism in Vienna and Berlin--with the proceeds from his novel THE RADETZKY MARCH. His wife went mad and had to be institutionalized. This event contributed to the depression and feeling of homelessness he struggled with all his life, but he continued to write (producing 16 novels in 16 years)--and to drink; his alcoholism became legendary. He died of alcohol withdrawal and pneumonia in a Paris hospital at the age of 43 after hearing about the suicide of a friend. After Roth's death, his wife, along with the other inmates of the hospital where she was confined, was exterminated by the Nazis.
