After continuing his studies in Europe, McDermott returned to Pratt where he began producing and directing animated films on mythology. It was his interest in mythology and cultural symbols that led him to create his first picture book, ANANSI THE SPIDER, which earned a Caldecott Honor in 1973. His next book, ARROW TO THE SUN, was awarded the 1975 Caldecott Medal.
