Author Bio
Robert McCloskey
Robert McCloskey was the first illustrator to win two Caldecott Medals. He attended the Vesper George Art School in Boston as well as the National Academy of Design in New York. His first picture book, LENTIL, appeared in 1940--the same year he married Margaret Durand, the daughter of author Ruth Sawyer. His next work, MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS, won the 1942 Caldecott Medal. In an effort to assure that his depiction of the ducks in this book was accurate, McCloskey purchased four mallards and let them live in his apartment so that he could observe their behavior. The characters in his next two picture books, BLUEBERRIES FOR SAL and ONE MORNING IN MAINE, were based on his wife and daughters. In 1958, TIME OF WONDER was awarded the Caldecott Medal. In addition to his picture books, McCloskey is also well known for his longer books about Homer Price. In 1974 he was awarded the Regina Medal for his body of work. Today, visitors to Boston, Massachusetts can see a tribute to McCloskey's most famous work--a statue of mama duck and her ducklings.
