Author Bio
Denise Fleming
Denise Fleming's career as an artist began when she was in the third grade and one of her paintings was reproduced on the cover of a magazine for teachers. Her career in children's publishing began in 1984 when she illustrated Alice Low's ALL THROUGH THE TOWN. The first book she both wrote and illustrated was 1991's IN THE TALL, TALL GRASS. Many of Fleming's picture book illustrations are "pulp paintings" which are created by forcing colored cotton pulp through hand-cut stencils. Her 1993 work IN THE SMALL, SMALL POND was named a Caldecott Honor Book.

Kirkus Reviews
"Visual delight and solid natural history aside, the joy of the story is the way in which it incorporates childlike attempts to delay bedtime and a beautifully turned, humorous ending. A perfect fit for the audience." 08/01/1997 Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Fleming's artistry with cotton rag fibers tinted in deep, autumnal colors provides a visual feast chock-full of the season's trademark richness laid out on handmade paper." - Pat Mathews December 1997
